The inception of the The Elite Referee Academy (TERA), Basketball Referee Development - Training & Education Program, has its roots in a strong desire to action the principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the services we provide as basketball officials in increasingly diverse sports communities.

 

Many tournaments, games, leagues and events are held under the umbrella of cultural, gender spacific, and faith-based communities. Our young participants represent the richness of these communities.

 

In order to provide the best experience for all involved, officials from across the Provinces were expressing that they not only wanted to develop their skills in 2 and 3 person mechanics, but to also understand and learn about the communities that were being served.  

 

To this end, TERA reached out to groups leading the development of grassroots sports in the Muslim community, the Black Caribbean community, Filipino, LGBTQ+, South Asian and Southeast Asian communities. Together we have been able to create opportunities for meaningful dialogue and honest learning that we can take onto the court. TERA resolves to continue to pursue excellence in this overarching part of our vocation as basketball officials.

 

TERA has seen increasing success among members in our officiating camps. Currently, a number of officials have mobilized this camp experience and knowledge gained, to move to officiate higher levels of basketball such as:

 

• FIBA - Fédération Internationale de Basketball

• U Sports - University Sport In Canada

• OUA - Ontario University Athletics

• CCAA - Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association

• (BSL) - Basketball Super League (formally the National Basketball League of Canada)

• CEBL - Canadian Elite Basketball League

• OSBA - Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association

EVOLVE ATHLET6IX LTD. is a non-profit organization that provides sporting events and activities in the community in a safe, accessible and inclusive manner.

 

The objective is to create sports-related opportunities, activities, workshops, and training for youth and young adults of the Greater Toronto Area, especially in under-served and vulnerable communities.

   

The goal is to create and foster measurable and positive impacts in the following key areas: Physical Health, Mental Health, Social and Emotional Well-being, Active Living, Sense of Community, and Connecting and Inspiring our Youth.
